About
In the CARE Lab, we study linguistic, social, and cognitive routes to emotion regulation, self-control, and connection.
In studying emotion regulation and self-control, we adopt a ‘toolbox’ approach, embracing the idea that the capacity to regulate one’s thoughts, feelings, and behaviors is facilitated by a constellation of strategies people can learn.
We explore questions like, what basic psychological processes help people regulate their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors? How do people use regulatory tools in daily life? Can people’s capacity to align their thoughts, feelings, or behaviors with their goals be improved?
In exploring connection, we focus on linguistic and cognitive processes that promote connection to one’s social world, ideas, people, and the self.
We explore questions like, how do subtle shifts in language facilitate the ability to make sense of our social worlds? Do linguistic shifts that emphasize a broader perspective enable connection to others? Do certain ways of thinking about one’s own identities predict self-efficacy or well-being?
